Our Story

Since its establishment in 1988, the Health Promotion Forum of New Zealand – Runanga Whakapiki Ake i te Hauora o Aotearoa (HPF), has been leading the ongoing development of health promotion as a professional practice in the country, while making significant contributions at the international level.

HPF is the umbrella organisation for all those who identify health promotion as part of their work.  Founded on the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the Ottawa Charter, our non-profit organisation provides information, training, and resources to build the workforce and health promotion leadership.

The membership of the Forum is made up of over 100 organisations committed to improving the health and wellbeing of New Zealanders.  In addition, over 3000 individuals with an interest in health promotion subscribe to our newsletter and information.

HPF co-established the first health promotion competencies in 2000, which was reviewed in 2012. Based on these competencies, HPF is now establishing an accreditation framework under the global framework of the International Union for Health Promotion and Education (IUHPE).  This framework gives formal recognition to the profession, its practitioners, and health promotion educational programmes, providing greater credibility for the workforce, while ensuring the efficacy of the practice and the wellbeing of communities.

As well as its leading work in Aotearoa New Zealand, HPF is increasingly being recognised as a health promotion leader at regional and international level. Our team is connecting more and more with other international leaders.  HPF successfully hosted the 2019 IUHPE World Conference on Health Promotion, held in Rotorua. It also established the IUHPE Global Working Group on Waiora Planetary Health in 202 to lead the advancement and implementation of the two Rotorua Legacy Statements with IUHPE and beyond.

HPF is a member of IUHPE.  HPF Executive Director Sione Tu’itahi is the President of IUHPE (2022-2025).
