A new paper
, published today, makes a further contribution to the development of Pacific leadership in health, education and other sectors.
Providing insight into the Tongan concepts of matapoto
(intelligence and shrewdness) and lotopoto
(wisdom and ethics), the paper explores the underlying values of these terms and how they are reflected in the values of many Pacific nations.
When used conjointly, the two terms indicate multi-dimensional intelligence, wisdom and consciousness. This paper illustrates the dynamic coherence between training the mind and educating the heart and highlights the importance of values as an integral part of knowledge and learning.
